As a theme park lover, it’s hard to beat Universal Orlando. With two massive parks, Universal Studios and Universal’s Islands of Adventure, there is no shortage of rides and attractions to explore. But with so many options, it can be overwhelming to decide which rides are truly the best. As a frequent visitor (and theme park junkie), I’ve compiled a list of the top rides at Universal Orlando that you simply can’t miss.

Introduction to Universal Orlando Resort
Before we dive into the rides, let’s take a quick look at what makes Universal Orlando so special. First off, there’s the theming. From the moment you step foot in the parks, you’re transported to different worlds. Whether you’re walking down the streets of Diagon Alley or exploring the jungles of Skull Island, the attention to detail is incredible.
But what really sets Universal Orlando apart is the rides. There’s a reason why it’s known as the “Thrill Capital of the World.” From high-speed roller coasters to immersive dark rides, Universal has it all. And with the recent addition of Jurassic World VelociCoaster, the park is only getting better. Where else can you literally “ride the movies”?
What Makes a Ride “The Best”?
Before we get into the specific rides, it’s worth discussing what makes a ride truly great. For me, it’s all about the combination of theming, innovation, and, of course, the thrill factor. A great ride should transport you to another world and make you forget that you’re in a theme park. It should also push the boundaries of what’s possible in terms of technology and storytelling. And, of course, it should get your heart racing and leave you wanting more.
Top Thrill Rides at Universal Orlando
If you’re a thrill seeker, Universal Orlando has no shortage of options. If roller coasters are your thing, be sure to check out our list of all roller coasters. Here are a few of the top rides that are sure to get your adrenaline pumping:
Jurassic World Velocicoaster
This rollercoaster has it all. Fast, speed, top hat, heartline roll (over the water), zero g stall and it all happens with no over-the shoulder-restraints. Theming is excellent with several Easter eggs in the queue from the whole franchise of movies. There is nothing else like it. The ride is smooth as butter.
If it’s thrills you seek, look no further. Starting with a dive loop and ended with the heartline roll over the water, this bucket list worthy coaster does not disappoint.
The Incredible Hulk Coaster
This high-speed roller coaster is a fan favorite for good reason. With a launch that propels you from 0 to 40 mph in just 2 seconds, multiple inversions (try 7), and a top speed of 67 mph, it’s not for the faint of heart. But what really sets the Hulk apart is the theming. The coaster is set in a massive green gamma-ray research facility, and the queue takes you through a lab where you can see the Hulk’s transformation firsthand. It’s a fan favorite for a reason. Get ready to Hulk out.
Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit
This coaster is unique in that you get to choose your own soundtrack before the ride starts. But don’t let the music distract you from the fact that you’re about to experience some serious thrills. With a 90-degree vertical climb (that’s straight up in case you were wondering), a top speed of 65 mph, and multiple inversions, the Rockit is not for the faint of heart.
Revenge of the Mummy
This indoor roller coaster takes you on a high-speed journey through a cursed Egyptian tomb. With sudden drops, tight turns, and even a few fire effects, it’s a thrilling ride from start to finish. But what really sets the Mummy apart is the theming. From the elaborate queue to the detailed ride scenes, you’ll feel like you’re on a movie set. The queue is a little dark but that only sets the mood. Forwards and backwards, you will enjoy the immersive story telling of this ride.
Dr. Doom’s Fearfall
When you see these towering towers, you will assume it is a classic dropline thrill ride. And it is. But with a twist. Instead of rising slowly to drop you, this one shoots you up to the top like you are riding a missile. If you crave adrenaline, this is the ride for you. It’s a very short ride. Which is good or bad depending on your thrill tolerance level. The views though.

This log flume ride is based on the classic cartoon character. You’ll ride through a wild west town and encounter various hijinks before plunging down a steep drop. It’s so fun that it didn’t matter that I didn’t really know who was who the first time I rode it (I only knew Optimus Prime) Be sure and catch the Transformer meet and greet at the side of the ride building.
Harry Potter Rides at Universal Orlando
No visit to Universal Orlando is complete without a visit to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. For everything from rides to shopping, be sure to read Muggle’s Guide to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Here are a few of the best rides based on the beloved franchise:
Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey
This dark ride takes you on a journey through Hogwarts Castle. With a mix of practical and digital effects, you’ll encounter everything from flying owls to dementors. But what really sets Forbidden Journey apart is the queue, which takes you through the castle’s various rooms and includes animatronic versions of your favorite characters. You will really feel like you are riding your broomstick. And the queue – the queue is amazing as it’s Hogwart’s Castle. Talking, moving photos and even the sorting hat.
Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure
This roller coaster is the newest addition to the Wizarding World, and it’s already a fan favorite. You’ll join Hagrid on a journey through the Forbidden Forest, encountering magical creatures along the way. With a mix of indoor and outdoor sections, multiple launches, and a thrilling drop, it’s a ride that will leave you wanting more. The ride vehicle is motorbikes and sidecars. Easily one of the best rides ever created.
Easily one of the best rides and a very popular ride, wait times are often long (but worth it). There is a single rider line and it is often a ride available for early park admission.
Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts
We’ve already mentioned this ride in the immersive experiences section, but it’s worth mentioning again. As a Harry Potter fan, there’s nothing quite like riding through the underground vaults of Gringott’s Bank and encountering Bellatrix Lestrange and Voldemort. This scene in the movies basically begged a ride to be created and this one is on par. A really fun ride with great storytelling.
Hogwarts Express
It couldn’t be the Wizarding World of Harry Potter without riding the real Hogwarts Express. You can ride from King’s Cross Station to Hogsmeade and then back again. Be sure to catch both as they are completely different rides.
You must have park-to-park tickets as the train goes between both parks. Every detail on the train is perfect. The experience is nothing short of, well, magical.
Jurassic Park Rides at Universal Orlando
With the opening of the Jurassic World VelociCoaster, it’s worth taking a look at the other Jurassic Park rides at Universal Orlando. Here are a few of the best:
Jurassic Park River Adventure
We’ve already mentioned this ride in the water rides section, but it’s worth mentioning again. As a classic Universal ride, it’s a must-ride for any theme park fan. Just a gentle boat ride with dinosaurs. What could go wrong?
Jurassic World VelociCoaster
.With multiple inversions, a top speed of 70 mph, and a unique seating arrangement that simulates riding on a raptor’s back, it’s sure to be a hit with thrill seekers. Everything about this ride is amazing. Owen tries to tell Claire that it’s a bad idea to put a roller coaster in the raptor paddock in the pre-show. But has Claire ever really listened?
If you summon up the courage, hold on to your butts for the ride of your life.
Raptor Encounter
While technically not a ride, the Raptor Encounter is still worth checking out. You’ll come face-to-face with a lifelike velociraptor (Blue), and if you’re brave enough, you can even take a photo with it. If you miss meeting Blue, they often have a baby raptor you can meet. Watch out he bites!

With so many great rides at Universal Orlando, it’s hard to fit them all into one article. Here are a few other popular options that are worth checking out:
The Simpsons Ride
This simulator ride takes you on a journey through Krustyland, home of the Simpsons. With plenty of humor and references to the show, it’s a hit with fans of the long-running series. Very fun ride but if you are prone to motion sickness be aware this may not be for you.
Men in Black: Alien Attack
This interactive ride takes you on a journey to save the world from alien invaders. With laser guns and plenty of targets, it’s a fun ride that allows you to compete against your fellow riders. We often play best 2 out of 3 against each other with the loser having to buy a nearby Lard Lads pink doughnut.
The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man
This dark ride takes you on a journey through New York City with everyone’s favorite web-slinger. With a mix of 3D screens and practical effects, it’s a ride that truly immerses you in the world of Spider-Man. One of the best rides in both parks.
Tips for Visiting Universal Orlando’s Best Rides
With so many great rides at Universal Orlando, it can be tough to fit them all into one day. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your visit:
• Get there early: The parks tend to be less crowded in the morning, so you’ll be able to ride more without having to wait in long lines. Early park admission will let you ride select rides an hour before anyone else. Staying at an on-site hotel provides early park admission.
• Use the single rider line: If you don’t mind riding alone, the single rider line can significantly reduce your wait time.
• Take advantage of Express Pass: While it can be expensive, the Express Pass allows you to skip the regular lines and ride more in less time. Express Pass is included with a stay at a premiere hotel or can be purchased separately.
• Download the Universal Orlando app: The app allows you to check wait times, reserve dining, and even use virtual queues on select rides (currently not available). The app is helpful in the parks and for any planning. Mobile ordering food is really useful.
• Stay hydrated: Florida can get hot, so be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
• Wear Appropriate Clothing. Comfortable shoes and breathable clothing are a must. I’m always amazed at the amount of new pairs of tennis shoes in the park. Break in any new shoes.
