In this article, we will explore various aspects of Nashville’s haunted history, the spine-tingling locations you can visit, and the thrilling supernatural experiences these ghost tours provide. There are a number and variety of ghost tours available, from the Hair Raising, to the Family Friendly, and everything in between for visitors of all ages and tastes.

1. Why is Nashville So Haunted?

The City’s Dark Past

Nashville’s haunted reputation can be attributed to many horrific events that have transpired throughout its history. From devastating floods and deadly droughts to the violent aftermath of the Civil War, the city has seen its fair share of tragedy and suffering. These dark events have left a lasting impact on Nashville’s present, with ghosts from its sordid past continuing to haunt the very same saloons, restaurants, and streets visitors frequent day and night.

The Civil War’s Unsettling Presence

The Civil War played a significant role in shaping Nashville’s dark history. Nashville, and Tennessee, in particular, have a unique history, among the States, during the Civil War. Tennessee, is divided into three (3), Grand Divisions, East, Middle, and West. Nashville is in the Middle Division.   Memphis is in The Western Division. Tennessee officially declared for BOTH SIDES during The Civil War.

The Middle, and West declaring for The Confederacy, and The East declaring for The Union. Many of the city’s historic buildings, and/or popular locations, were transformed into makeshift hospitals and morgues for the wounded and deceased soldiers. Today, there are countless eyewitness accounts of eerie figures and apparitions roaming around town.  Believed to be the long-dead spirits of Civil War soldiers. One such chilling figure, known as “The Gray Man,” has been sighted wandering the halls of the Ryman Auditorium (the home of The Grand Ole Opry, the home of Country Music, for many years), and watching concert goers from the shadows.

2. A Glimpse of the Haunted Locations

Nashville ghost tours take visitors on a spine-chilling journey through the city’s most haunted locations. From infamous honky-tonks and haunted pubs to spine-tingling cemeteries and eerie tunnels, these tours cover a wide range of paranormal hotspots. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most popular haunted locations featured on Nashville ghost tours.

Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge

One of Broadway’s very first honky-tonks, Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge, is said to be the eternal resting place of its former owner, Tootsie Bess.  A local legend, and while alive, Patron Saint, for struggling musicians, often providing them with cash and free meals before their performances. Her spirit is believed to still haunt the establishment, silently cheering on aspiring musicians from beyond the grave. Tootsies Orchid Lounge is still a thriving establishment.  And not at all a bad place for some good times while absorbing some local atmosphere, and sometimes, just sometimes, some chilling tales of the downtown Nashville area.

Ernest Tubb Record Shop

Once a Civil War-era makeshift hospital and morgue, the Ernest Tubb Record Shop is another stop on Nashville ghost tours. Visitors can listen to blood-curdling accounts of how the despair of wounded and dead soldiers transformed into dark energy that still permeates the building’s foundations.

The Haunted Tunnels of Nashville

Hidden beneath the city’s streets lies a network of tunnels with a dark and sinister past. These tunnels once served as the location for prostitution, gambling, and other nefarious activities. Although they have long been boarded up.  So they say.  Chilling disembodied voices can still be heard echoing through the underground passages.

3. The Ghosts of Printers Alley

Printer’s Alley is in the historic downtown Nashville, district. Known for its bars, clubs, and once-thriving printing industry, and also once thriving former red light district. Today, the area is home to several ghostly figures that continue to haunt its establishments and streets. Among the most famous spirits are those of the original Rainbow Room owner, who committed suicide in the building.  Also,  David “Skull” Schulman, a beloved nightclub owner who was brutally murdered in 1998.

Night time is the time that Printers Alley really comes to life, as can attest generations of Fraternity men, locals, and tourists. Unless with a tour group, I would not consider this area “Family Friendly”, to those with small children, or those of a sensitive nature. At least during the hours of darkness.
